Friends,
Getting over a summer bug is never fun. When you compound it with computer, website, and password chaos, my nervous system feels frayed, and my brain feels broken.
So, we’re heading to the coast for a week. Where the fog rolls in at night and greets you in the chill of early morning. Maybe the sun will break through in the afternoon, maybe not.
I wanted to let you know I’ll be off for a few weeks to breathe the ocean air, walk along the bay, watch the seagulls fish, and rest.
Also, read. And write. I plan to experiment with a scene rattling around in the corners of my mind, begging to take shape and form. Inspired by
and I’m excited to explore new ways to midwife a piece and help it come alive, including how I might play with the words, structure, tone, and texture. I hope to feel less constrained, allowing me to step into the current of possibilities. For inspiration and joy, I’ll pack The Book of Delights by the poet and essayist Ross Gay. Wild Mercy - Living the Fierce and Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics by Mirabai Starr to reread with fresh eyes. And always when at the beach, my treasured copy of Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, which we discussed last month in The Haven. For added pleasure, I’ll open up my Substack app and read the numerous writers I have fallen in love with.
