But I want first of all - in fact, as an end to these other desires - to be at peace with myself. I want a singleness of eye, a purity of intention, a central core to my life that will enable me to carry out these obligations and activities as well as I can.
I am seeking perhaps what Socrates asked for in the prayer from the Phaedrus when he said, ‘May the outward and inward man be at one.’
Gift from the Sea, by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Hello Friends,
As I’ve mentioned in an earlier post, July 10th would have been my mother’s 96th birthday. As I prepared for our session this week, I remembered how my mom loved the book Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
So, I pivoted and sat down to reread it for, I don’t know, the umpteenth time. You can see by the photo that the copy my mother gave to me on my 22nd birthday, with her precious inscription, was so well-loved that I needed to purchase a new edition.
Each time I read Gift from the Sea, I discover something new—something more to consider about the woman and author whose life was, at times, notoriously public and layered, about my mother and her life, about each of you and myself.
I’m so looking forward to our gathering in The Haven on Wednesday, July 10th, 4:00 pm PT. (The Zoom Link will be sent on Wednesday)
It is definitely not necessary to have read the book, as our session will not be a “book club” discussion. I will share thoughts and contemplations relevant to Gift from the Sea that relate to our time together and the work we do in The Haven to expand our Curiosity, Courage, Creativity, and Consciousness—the four C's.
To join our next gathering, you can manage your subscription by clicking on the link below.
With love, Paulette
P.S. If you, like me, are a seashell collector, please bring a favorite one with you, along with a pen and journal.
Paulette, I didn't see this until after we were off our call. I'd like to participate. I have a MahJongg group that plays on Wednesday afternoons, but I am going to try to get home in time. Can you send me a link? This sounds amazing!
Happy birthday to your mother in the timeless beyond. I too saw such different things in this book when I reread it a couple of years ago. It brought back how much my understanding had changed. I’m glad I still have my old copy.
